Did some investigation of this problem and detailed everything in a post to opera forum.
Still don't know why it was seg-faulting but installed 9.50 build 1887 (untarred and then sudo ./install.sh) and this has worked fine for about an hour except that Gmail won't open. So, in any event I now have a working Opera (except for Gmail)
